Kiev State Drama and Comedy Theatre

“The close relationship between theatre and war is as old and enduring as theatre and war themselves. The large gatherings of audiences in need of entertainment (...) are fertile ground for every genre of theatrical life, sometimes favoured by certain methods of warfare.”— Jürgen Hein

about

History

The Kyiv State Drama and Comedy Theatre on the left bank of the Dnipro River was founded on 7 September 1978. In May 1982, the city hall handed over the building, which had previously housed the Cosmos cinema, to the team and director Eduard Mytnyckyi. The "Theatre in the Foyer" - the first small stage in Kiev and Ukraine - was initially established within its walls. On 18 January 2019, Stas Zhyrkov and Tamara Trunova took over the management of the theatre. The new team began the process of reforming and modernising the theatre.

Mission

In times of war, cultural funds are scarce, in this particular case in Ukraine, and cultural workers fear for their survival. In the case of comedies, the humour that goes with it are important for those living in war, for those scared by war and for coming to terms with what is happening.

And not just for thinking, hoping, taking a step back, finding redemption and briefly switching off. Written and premiered in England, "The Play That Goes Wrong" by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields is characterised by the finest British humour and great fun (media reviews by Bayerischer Rundfunk, Franken post, Journal Luxemburg) - with numerous awards such as the Olivier Award, Broadway World UKAward and WhatsOnStageAwards.

Our involvement
