about

Aim

For her upcoming major choral composition, Auerbach draws inspiration from her personal encounters during a profound visit to the Arctic.

Moved by the richness of the indigenous people's culture and deeply affected by the looming climate crisis, "Flights of the Angakok" emerges as a poignant and urgent work. The piece serves as a reflection on the impact of climate change on the unique culture of the original inhabitants of the Arctic.

In a remarkable collaboration, Auerbach involves a specially assembled team of cultural and language advisers from the Arctic indigenous community. This team plays a pivotal role in the conception and realization of the composition, ensuring an authentic representation of the Inuit experience.

The libretto is meticulously crafted in the original Inuit languages, Inuktitut and Kalaallisut, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the composition.

Team

"Flights of the Angakok" not only explores the endangered nature of the Arctic but also delves into the rich cultural tapestry of the region.

Auerbach finds inspiration in the mythical Inuit shaman, the angakok. The pianist, portrayed by top Dutch talent Yang Yang Cai, takes on the role of the shaman, guiding the audience through a ritualistic journey.

The choir becomes the voice of nature's spirits, singing of light, wind, and water in a harmonious and symbolic celebration. The Nederlands Kamerkoor is further enriched by the ethereal presence of Inuit soprano Deantha Edmunds, adding an authentic dimension to the collaborative performance.
